In my experience, while the expansion is not essential, it does bring an interesting variation to the solo experience and more general stuff to re-freshen the game for the Mage Knight enthusiast.So while you can perfectly play plain old Mage Knight without the expansion. If you're like me and start lusting for 'more' you can not go wrong with buying the espansion.
