Charles is right, you either have two mana sources or a race for mana. Personally I like the race for mana as it adds some interaction. Likewise you'd have a bit of race for spells, action cards and units.

Simultaneity is key, I think. It speeds up the game and encourages the race aspect. I need to try out some ways to end the round. Mostly it's the difference between the following two options:

1) One player declares end of round, other player(s) finish their current turn and get one last turn

2) One player declares end of round, other players(s) finish their current turn.

I'm leaning towards (2) as it adds a bit more tension.

I also plan on laying out all the tiles face down to start. Exploring is just flipping (and possibly orienting for a cost) a tile.

The center area would be circular, with one core tile in the middle and rings of core tiles around it. Could have one city or many cities I suppose. That could change the ending goals a bit. Might be interesting to have General Volkare's camp in the very center, with defeating Volkare being the goal.
